18/52: Kentucky Derby Day 2018

We had a wonderful day at Emerald Downs on Saturday to see not only live horse racing, but also the similcast of the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Once again this year, we had an outdoor box (undercover) in the grandstand area.

There were plenty of dressed up people, including Brian and I and of course lots of hats.

We cashed in a few winning tickets (Brian did quite well on the Derby, I did not), but the racing is always fun win or lose.

Get ready, in two weeks its race #2 of the triple crown the Preakness Stakes.

Enjoy!

19/52: Kentucky Derby Day and Mother's Day Brunch

Last Saturday, Brian and I celebrated Kentucky Derby Day at Emerald Downs in Auburn, WA.  It's a fun event and the weather was fabulous.  It's a great day to people watch and try and cash a few winning tickets.  I won a few races at Emerald Downs, but Brian and I didn't have any luck with the Derby this year.  The Preakness is May 21st.

On Sunday, we hosted Mom and Kenny for Mother's Day Brunch.  In honor of Brian's Mom who passed away several years ago, I used her blue china and her silver as a way of remembering her and keeping her memory in our home.  I made biscuits and gravy from scratch and Sammy spoiled Grammy with mimosas and presents.

How did you spend the first weekend in May?

Enjoy,
Stacy

18/52: Kentucky Derby Day

Last Saturday was the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.  The derby is run on the first Saturday in May and is know as the "most exciting two minutes in sports"!

On Kentucky Derby Day, Brian and I headed down to Auburn, WA to Emerald Downs to watch not only live racing but also the broadcast of the Derby.

This year, I had a very special hat given to me by family friend, Nan Cross.  It was a hat that she bought for a lifelong friend, who died recently...so it was an honor for me to wear it and think of Phyllis.

We had an amazing day and the weather was perfect!

The second race at Emerald Downs featured a horse named Sticks and Twigs, I loved the name and at 12-1, I placed a $5 to win bet and walked away a winner at $69.70.  What a great way to start the day!

Brian hit an exacta on the Kentucky Derby, which was amazing because we never win on the derby!  He walked away with about $180 which paid for our day and the amazing pizza/pasta dinner at Peel and Press on the way home!

The second to the last race of the day at Emerald Downs featured a horse called Our Boy Ken.  I put him in an exacta with a couple of favorites and won $39.50! It was bittersweet and I cried tears of joy, thinking of Brian's late brother Ken and how he would have gotten a real kick out of us betting on that horse for him.  If there is a heaven...and if those who passed can look down upon us, there is no doubt that Ken was there with us at that very moment (and Phyllis would have loved that I was wearing her hat).

Enjoy!

Kentucky Derby Day

Last Saturday, Brian and I went down to Emerald Downs in Auburn, WA to watch some live horse racing and watch the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

It was an unusually warm spring day!  When we arrived at Emerald Downs, we found a large crowd and lots of ladies in hats.  I bought my little ensemble off EBAY for less than $20 (a great place to buy vintage hats if you ever need one).

Right off the bat....I won the Emerald Downs daily double (I picked the winner of the first and second races).  I won $23!!

It was all downhill from there.  Neither Brian or I cashed a ticket on the Derby (we never do), but we had a great afternoon.

Enjoy!

Kentucky Derby Day

Brian and I went to Emerald Downs on Saturday for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.

We didn't bet on the favorite, Big Brown (we never pick the favorite) so needless to say, we didn't cash a ticket the entire day. It was cold and wet so we didn't walk to the railing to see many races at the track, but we still had a fun afternoon (here is a picture of another winning horse that we didn't bet on).

Enjoy!
