15/52: Mid Month "rainy" Musings

We needed an adventure desperately!

We've had 14 out of 15 days of rain.  Seattle is breaking records as one of the wettest Aprils on record.

When I first met Brian he told me, "I never let the weather dictate my life" so Saturday's almost 2 inches of rain was no issue.

39/52: Dinner at Leaky Roof and Our First Portland Timbers Game

It was a busy week in Portland last week.  Brian was in town teaching and so we planned a few end of summer activities.

First stop......

An expiring Groupon at The Leaky Roof in Portland, one of our favorite little British-Irish-Scottish pubs in the Goose Hollow area of Portland.

Country Fried Chicken ($15.50)

Battered Chicken Breast, Creamy Peppered Gravy, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables

On Tuesday night, our friends, Bryan and Maddie treated us to a Portland Timbers soccer game against Alpha United at Providence Park.

The Timbers are just about the hottest ticket in town and they have very coveted season tickets (right near the Timbers Army section) and managed to snag two extra seats and invited us!

Timber Jim saws a hunk of wood off a big log after every Timbers goal, then after the game, presents the cutting to the goal kicker(s)

I started watching the English Premier League last year and then with the World Cup over the summer, Brian and I have started seriously "getting into" soccer.

Despite a steady drizzle, we had a blast!!

Constants "chants" from the Timbers Army the entire match and smoke bombs for every Timbers goal!

The game was great, but the crowd watching was even better (in fact I had a hard time watching the game because I was trying to learn all the chants).

West Seattle Weekend Wrap Up: Decorating West Seattle and a Trip to Edmonds

We had a busy Saturday!

We first unleashed the Christmas closet and decorated the entire house, minus the tree which we will get next weekend!

Then it was off to Edmonds.  Every year, Brian and I try to get up there at least once during the holiday season.

It's a cute little town, situated on the Puget Sound with an independent bookstore, a cheese monger, pubs, coffee shops and a wine store.  It's the perfect place to wander and explore, especially around Christmas.

One of our first stops is always the Edmonds Bookshop.  This year they are celebrating their 40th year!  

No trip to Edmonds would be complete without a stop in to see the local cheesemonger.  The Resident Cheesemonger's Table moved locations recently.  The shop is bigger, serves hot/cold sandwiches, soups, etc. and is also closer to the wine shop (directly across the street from the old Tully's location).  

We had a small cup of yummy smokey tomato bisque, just perfect to warm our bellies on a cold, wet day.

After window shopping, picking up some chocolate at Nama's Candy Store, it was time for a wine tasting at Arista Wine Cellars.  Saturday's tastings were from Nine Hats Wines in Walla Walla, WA.

What a fun day!


Visit Edmonds...you will love it!

On our way home, I finally caught a glimpse of the Space Needle all decked out in holiday lights!

But the best lights of all are on our own home.  It looks like a little Christmas Cottage!

The Storm

Brian's power finally came back on after Thursday night's big wind storm. Luckily, he was in Portland over the weekend, but he's guessing that he was without power over 48 hours.

I found this picture on-line. It was taken in front on Titlow Lodge near Titlow beach and about 1 mile from Brian's apartment.

There is still an estimated 225,000 without power into their 5th day.

Storm shuts Mount Rainier park

Nearly 18 inches of rain in 36 hours. That's how much fell at Mount Rainier National Park, one of the crown jewels of the Pacific Northwest, and more rain and snow is forecast through the weekend. The deluge on Monday and Tuesday swamped roads and bridges, cut power and sewer lines, and forced park officials to close the gates for the first time in 26 years.

Portland: 4.08 inches
Eugene: 3.57 inches
Olympia: 4.89 inches
Tacoma: 4.18 inches

Astoria, OR set a daily record with 2.8 inches and Portland set a daily record with 1.79 inches on Monday.

Time to Build an Ark

I wish I was going to Cabo San Lucas today! I just took Sandra to the airport for her 10 day Mexican vacation. Lucky girl! It's going to be 90 there this afternoon.

Today we are expecting gusts up to 40MPH with over 2 inches of rain within the next 24 hours.

Oh, and Portland had an earthquake at 9:34 PM last night. The quake was initially reported as a 2.6 magnitude event centered at SW 5th Ave. and SW Madison, less than one block from Portland City Hall.
