30/52: Hot Fun in the Summer Time

You can feel the dog days starting, but the heatwave continued all throughout the weekend as Seattle reached unprecedented and consecutive days with 90 or above temps.

Not too much you can do but early morning walks along the water and afternoon car trips to air conditioned luxury (casino, anyone?).

Friday night instead of cooking, we tried a new place in West Seattle that was on Dinner, Drive-ins and Dives a few weeks ago called Pizzeria Credo.  We must go back for the pizza!  We were both hungry for some pasta which was good (not great).

Cooler temps are on their way and more hot fun in the summer time!

Some weekends are just perfect.

36/52: Brian's Birthday Weekend (otherwise known as Labor Day Weekend)

It was hard for me to miss Brian's birthday last Thursday.  He's not one to complain, but I know that he probably didn't want to spend the day alone (however, he did just get over an epic road trip with my Pop to Reno).  

I took the early train to Seattle on Friday night and treated him to Mexican food at one of our favorite West Seattle Restaurants, Cactus.

Saturday we were invited to my Mom and Kenny's for a birthday lunch and we had a nice relaxing afternoon on their patio before heading home for a quiet Saturday night at home.

Sunday morning we tried a new breakfast place right on Alki Beach called Alki Cafe.  Cheers to great food and a bloody Mary to start the day!

We managed to hit Alki Beach after breakfast.  It was our first day at the beach this year.  It was a cool day, but with enough sun to really make it enjoyable.

Neither one of us said anything, but the noticeably cooler temps and earlier setting sun  (and rising sun) really made it feel like summer is ending.  Local kids have already headed back to school and Monday's holiday was the unofficial end of summer.  

It's been real, Summer 2016.

23/52: Around West Seattle

We stuck pretty close to home this past weekend and we were rewarded with beautiful weather and warm temps.

Friday night, when I got off the train from Portland, Brian and I headed back to West Seattle and down along Alki Beach to Blue Moon Burgers.  They opened in West Seattle a few months ago and I bought an Amazon Groupon for $22 worth of burgers, sides and shakes for $12.  The burgers were not cheap, but they were huge along with generous sides of French fries and onion rings!  To be honest...we like other places in West Seattle better, but it's always fun to try a new place and it was a treat to sit outside along busy Alki as the sun was setting.

We finally got back to walking both Saturday and Sunday mornings...3+ miles through Lincoln Park each day.  It felt nice to be back at it again as we are a bit behind on our summer goals. There was a minus tide on the beach and it's always interesting to see what is underneath the water in spots normally covered with 5-6 feet of water.

Brian tried a new breakfast dish on Saturday that I had torn out of a cooking magazine.  It was a Simply Potatoes dish called Cowboy Hash and it was quite good.

The rest of Saturday was spent tackling garden project #3.  The front yard area and flower box we did first and aside from some weeding, another layer of bark and a few leftover flowers to plant...we are both really pleased with the completion of project #1.

Sunday before last (Memorial Day Weekend), I worked on the Secret Garden (project #2) which was a chore.  Lots of weeding, and then I laid down two bags of bark and planted two coleus and a cosmo (last picture above). 

This past Saturday we finished project #3 (Peace Garden) which was quite a mess and extended down along the western fence line.  Mostly weeding, a layer some top soil and then bark and some finish work (not much sunlight to plant much of anything), but I like the clean and tidy look. Brian worked his butt off! (sorry no picture, but I'll post next weekend). 

Finally, it was time to sit back and enjoy our work with a nice iced tea on the patio.

32.75/52: Summer in West Seattle

Last weekend we just didn't feel like ridding.  This past weekend, with temps back up in the 80's we took another ride along Alki Beach early in the morning.

We rode almost 8 miles (just short of my goal of 10), but we both felt great after the ride and are getting stronger on our bikes with each ride.

Friday night it was date night at Shadowland in West Seattle.  I bought a $15 LivingSocial coupon and we treated ourselves to dinner in the neighborhood.

Saturday night it was cocktails and a BBQ on my Mom and Kenny's patio.

31/52: West Seattle Summer

 Mount Rainer as seen from Amtrak Coast Starlight

HOT!

We spent the weekend trying to cool off with various activities.

Our first bike ride of the year on Sunday morning (before the heat of the day set in).  Only 6.72 miles, but it was a good ride and a good start.

A cold beer (Miller Hi-Life to be exact) at the West Seattle Summer Festival.  It's always one of the hottest days of the year!  A great community gathering and something we always look forward to.

Poor Sammy!  He loves the sunshine, but hates the heat.  Brian found him on top of the Maui suitcase after I left Monday morning.  Do you think he knows that we only have 42 days until we leave?
